Welcome

I’m an author who’s as passionate about photography as I am about writing novels. It all started when I was a kid and my dad bought me a Kodak Instamatic 100 camera. When I was in college I purchased a Nikkormat (Nikon) 35mm for a photography course. I ended up using that camera for more than thirty years. Now I’ve gone digital and I’m having more fun than ever.

.
I’m doing this blog for fun and out of my love for photography. I make no claim of being a professional photographer. In other words, I don’t do commercial photography. I do, however, consider myself an artist. The lens is my canvas, and some, (but not all), of my images are available for purchase. Those that are include links, and no, you’re not under any obligation to buy. So, please, enjoy the photos, but please remember, all of my images are copyrighted.

Keyboard Player

I love doing concert photography, and most of my images feature the headliners. After all, they’re the ones the audience comes to see. But behind those headliners are the other musicians, who, while not in the spotlight, do an important job. They’re the ones who make the headliners sound good.

I got this photo of a keyboard player at a recent Three Dog Night tribute shoe at The Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley, Arizona. Like the others, he did an amazing job. He even performed a solo. However, he spent most of the evening playing the keyboard while others were in the spotlight.

Desert Sundown

There’s more to sunset photography than just the setting sun. As the sun dips low in the sky the landscape changes into vivid colors. Especially in places like Arizona. And by the way, the saguaro cactus is a rare plant. They are only found in Arizona, and on the Baja Peninsula.

Prescott Highway Interchange at Night

Night photography has its challenges. Before digital photography came along, I did night photography with timed exposures. Nowadays, with digital cameras, it’s a little different. Instead of using different exposure times, I’m experimenting with different camera settings. This time the result wasn’t bad.

Mischievous Musicians

Many of my friends are professional musicians. Being an artist myself, we all understand one another. We also support each other. I took this concert photograph at one of their shows. While it may look like they’re making mischief, the photo is really about their relationship to one another. They are all close friends. I think this is why their band has such as strong following. People can sense the closeness and harmony that comes from good friendships.

The band is called The Tributaries. The venue was The Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley, Arizona.

Lake Havasu Sunset

Photographers call the time before, during and after sunset the magic hour. That’s because the sun creates all kinds of interesting lights and shadows. Not to mention beautiful colors as well.

I took this photo from a boat at Lake Havasu, Arizona. Does life get any better than this? Somehow, I doubt it.

Peaceful Scottish Lake

While we photographers can control the composition, we cannot control the weather. As luck would have it, it was overcast when we visited this location. However, I have more control in the digital darkroom. And, after a few minor tweaks, I created a more colorful image.

Sepia Tone Eve

I’m as much of an artist as I am a photographer. This means I sometimes take things a little further and create different effects. So, I played around with one of my photos from my Eve series. The result is a portrait photograph that looks like a still from an old silent movie. For me, photography is about thinking outside the box. Model Emma Paunil.

Military Airplane

Sometimes you’re in the right place, at just the right time, and you have your camera ready. And when it happens, the results can be amazing.

I was visiting San Diego and just happened to be in the right place when a military airplane flew overhead. There are a number of military air bases in and around San Diego, so I’m not exactly sure where this airplane was about to land. It is, however, a wonderful photograph resulting from being in the right place at the right time.

Five Way Street at the Gaslight Music Hall

Concert photography presents its own set of challenges. I can’t control the lighting. And the subjects are in motion. However, this doesn’t mean I can’t get good photos, because I can. But I sometimes have to get creative in post production.

Funny things can happen when the lighting constantly changes. My composition may be spot on, but the subjects look washed out. When this happens one solution is to go black and white and emphasize the lights and shadows. And it works.

The band is Five Way Street. Location, The Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley, Arizona.
